4 • VBA JOURNAL hroughout its 126-year history, Te Virginia Bar Association has continually demonstrated its efectiveness as the driving force behind landmark improvements to the administration of justice and the legal profession at large in Virginia. Tese improvements have resulted from a wide variety of VBA activities, including comprehensive legislative reform and public service programs that make the legal system better for clients and practitioners alike and enhance access to justice for citizens in need. In recent years alone, for example, the VBA has played a leading role in the General Assembly's flling and funding of judicial vacancies and its enactment of the Rules of Evidence, the creation of the biennial Chief Justice's Pro Bono Summits at the Supreme Court of Virginia to improve the provision of statewide legal services for the poor, the formation of a task force to assist veterans returning to Virginia from war with crushing legal problems, the creation of the Rule of Law Project to teach middle school students throughout Virginia that the rule of law is the basis of all of our rights and responsibilities as American citizens, and the drafting of BY JOHN L. What is not as well understood or appreciated is the direct correlation between VBA membership and the institutional success of law frms, corporations and agencies with VBA members. Te same benefts of VBA membership that provide meaningful value to individual VBA members also provide signifcant institutional value to the organizations that employ those VBA members.
