4 • VBA JOURNAL PRESIDENT'S PAGE Veterans, Children, and the VBA BY HARRY M. "PETE" JOHNSON III PRESIDENT, THE VIRGINIA BAR ASSOCIATION V eterans, children, and the VBA. At frst blush, these three things appear to have little in com- mon. But there is a connection. And that con- nection matters to every practicing lawyer, as well as to their families. Let's see if you can decipher the connection before the end of this article. VETERANS Te VBA's Veterans Issues Task Force was formed in 2009 to address legal issues faced by veterans returning from service. Since that time, the VITF has been led by Robert Barrett and Matthew Kapinos, both of whom are combat veterans themselves. One of the VITF's core functions is to provide pro bono legal assistance to veterans through a vol- unteer network of VBA members. More than 100 veterans and their families have been assisted in such areas as family law, landlord-tenant, criminal law, and veterans benefts. Te VITF is an example of the impact of the VBA's emphasis on pro bono in 2015. Trough the VBA Young Lawyers Division and the new Pro Bono Council, we are ex- panding our eforts to recruit volunteers to assist even more veterans. Timothy McHugh is spearheading the YLD efort statewide. Ashlee Webster and Bryan Holbrook are assisting in the Roanoke area, Chip Hancock and Austin Maloney in Richmond, and other YLD members are in line to co- ordinate volunteers in Tidewater and Northern Virginia. Te enthusiasm to help our nation's returning warriors is infectious. To get a sense of it, refect on the inspiring sto- ries on the Veterans Initiative page of the VBA website at vba.org/veterans. Te VBA is also leveraging the assets of other organiza- tions to provide the best possible service to veterans and to VBA volunteers. We are now partnering with the Greater William Haneke, Matthew Kapinos, Robert Barrett, and Edward McNelis III at a Veterans Issues Task Force event. (Photo by Katie Hefin)
