Oostdyk learned the value of giving back. Having watched his father start one of the country's largest literacy organizations and minister to youth in Harlem, Oostdyk learned early about the issues that exist for the inner-city poor. "So many Americans operate on such a thinly balanced life system," said Oostdyk, a partner with McGuireWoods LLP in Richmond. "Tey are two paychecks away from poverty, and timely counsel can make a huge diference." Trough the years, Oostdyk saw the gap between those who could aford lawyers and those who could not. He decided to join in with professionals doing something about it. Oostdyk has not only represented clients pro bono – for a free or reduced rate – he's responsible for the pro bono delivery of his frm's 975 lawyers in 18 ofces worldwide. In addition, he is co-chair of Te Virginia Bar Association's Pro Bono Council, a member of the Supreme Court of Virginia's Access to Justice Task Force, and active in Firms in Service, which encourages attorneys across Virginia to put aside a competitive mind-set and team up to promote pro bono work.
