UPCOMING IN THE AUTUMN Tis fall we will hold the meeting in Fairfax on October 12-13. Please see www.vba.org/calender for details and hotel information. It will include a barbecue, a trip to a local farm for the family and a tour of local wineries. YLD NEWSLETTER: OPENING STATEMENT By now I hope you all have read the latest edition of the new YLD newsletter, Opening Statement. Andrew Stockment of Clement & Wheatley, Virginia Flynn of Troutman Sanders and Jean Humbrecht have worked hard to put this newsletter together. It is a great source of YLD information and outlines our upcoming events. Additionally, Opening Statement provides an excellent opportunity for YLD members to publish articles and our editors are always looking for additional content. LEGAL FOOD FRENZY For the sixth straight year, the YLD has led the effort to collect food for local food banks across the commonwealth. Te Legal Food Frenzy is a two-week competition of law firms, government agencies and other groups of lawyers. Tis year the YLD coordinated the effort to collect 1.44 million pounds of food. I want to acknowledge the hard work of the young lawyers who co-chaired the Legal Food Frenzy. Te dedication of Christopher Gill of Christian & Barton, Derek Swanson of McGuireWoods and Virginia Robinson of Seyfarth Shaw to the Food Frenzy allows this program to flourish. I look forward to next year's competition and challenge to collect even more food. PRO BONO ACTIVITIES At the Pro Bono Summit at the Supreme Court of Virginia in April, Chief Justice Kinser challenged our profession to im- prove and increase the pro bono services in our communities. Troughout our history, the YLD has been on the forefront of pro bono services. We continue to expand on these services with our Ask-A-Lawyer program in connection with Verizon. Using Verizon's technology and services, we have developed a program that expands on our success with regional hotlines and now allows lawyers in more populated areas of the state to serve areas in need. If you are interested in volunteering for the Ask- A-Lawyer program, please email Elizabeth Ebanks at LeClair- Ryan at elizabeth.ebanks@leclairryan.com.
