Wood III e Reed Smith LLP law firm has donated $6,900 to e Virginia Bar Foundation to support the VBA veterans initiative of the Veterans Issues Task Force. e funds stem from a sanctions award in the firm's favor by the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. e firm defended against claims made against one of its attorneys, Patrick Andriano, who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. The Virginia Bar Foundation and e Virginia Bar Association extend thanks to Reed Smith, former VBA Board of Governors member S. Miles Dumville of the firm, and VBA member Patrick T. Andriano for this generous gift. We also applaud the pro bono services provided to military veterans by attorneys at Reed Smith and at legal offices across the commonwealth. e veterans initiative began with an educational program at a statewide VBA meeting in 2009 that shined a light on legal problems faced by servicemembers. Since mid-2014 the VBA veterans initiative has received more than 650 requests for legal assistance by servicemembers, in- cluding 300 last year. e initiative also encourages attorneys to join the effort and provide pro bono or reduced-fee legal services. Since December 2015, the Veterans Issues Task Force has part- nered with the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation to enhance the delivery of pro bono legal services to veterans, in part through case placement.
