YLD Executive Committee member Elaina Blanks chats with Judge Robert Wooldridge Jr. before his CLE ethics presentation during the fall YLD meeting. difcult to devote time to our organization and even more difcult to request funds to participate in our events. It is my belief that our organization continues to provide great value in the form of professional development, community service opportunities and pro bono service. Our recently published newsletter, Opening Statement, illustrates all of the opportunities the YLD has to ofer. With the addition of 1,000 new lawyers to the bar, now is the time to reiterate and re-emphasize the importance of the YLD. Please consider this my request to encourage a new lawyer to join the YLD, provide fnancial support to our current members or even participate in one of our programs. In addition to our support from the senior bar, our own young lawyers help mentor and cultivate leadership opportunities. We need to continue to reach out to our members and engage them. Again, we depend upon the recruitment of young lawyers by other young lawyers. We need to strive to improve our outreach and message in order to fnd the next generation of young lawyer leaders. Travis Hill (from left), Dan Ortiz and Elaina Blanks review some paperwork during the fall business meeting. Without a doubt, the YLD will continue to thrive given the support of our members. Please take the time this winter to encourage your associate, colleague, ofce mate or employee to not only join the YLD but get engaged in our programs. A WORD OF THANKS When this article is published, I will have nearly concluded my term as Chair of the YLD. It has been a wonderful experience and I wanted to take the opportunity to thank several people. First, my colleagues at Blankingship & Keith, P.C., have been generous with their time and support during this past year and I am eternally grateful. I have counted on the eforts of Jeremy Dillon, the VBA Director of Operations, to keep the YLD on track. Over the past year, Travis Hill and Elaina Blanks have faithfully served as the Chair-elect and Secretary-Treasurer. Teir service over the past year suggests that their upcoming terms will be energetic. If you are a young lawyer and want to get more involved, I invite you to contact me at dortiz@bklawva.com. n Members of the YLD enjoy a meal during the fall meeting in Fairfax. Active members serve as the backbone of the YLD organization. Photos by Jeremy Dillon WINTER 2012-2013 • 7
